A staircase is a series of steps designed to gain access between floor levels. Common staircase components include the string, treads, risers, newel posts, balustrades, and handrails.
Staircases are made of many different materials to include, hardwoods, softwoods, MDF, metal and building materials such as concrete.
Payne Carpentry Ltd have supplied and installed all kinds of staircases over the years from steel fabricated, pre-cast concrete stairs to all styles of timber staircases.
WHAT IS THE INSTALLATION PROCESS OF A STAIRCASE?
It is essential that the building is watertight prior to installing timber staircases to prevent water damage. Pre-cast concrete & steel fabricated staircases do not necessarily require the building to be watertight as these types of staircase are generally installed with the use of a crane.
Ordinarily a traditional timber staircase would be installed prior to the walls being plastered although some developers may work outside of this method. Usually the staircase will hook on to a floor joist trimmer at the top of the flight and be fixed into that trimmer and through the side of the staircase that abuts a wall. It is important to have knowledge of what the flooring make up’s will be to ensure that the top step is flush with the finished floor to prevent trip hazards.
All the steps should be of the same amount of going and rise, all steps other than the very bottom step will be established by the manufacturer. It is important to know what the finished floor build up will be at the bottom of the flight in order to maintain this regularity, particularly in modern construction where finished floors are placed on top of sub-floors, incorporating underfloor heating systems etc.
